Turbonomic has been assuring performance in your infrastructure through recommendations that you’ve been applying manually or automated. Performance has been great, end users are happy, and your data center is humming along. You understand what makes those circles Green! Now ask yourself, “how hard does Turbonomic have to work in order to produce those Green Circles?” We’ve added functionality in 5.5 to help you answer that question.
In this document we are going to walk you through how to build your very own Executive Dashboard.
Below is an example of an Executive Dashboard and the widgets I used to create it. If you would like a tutorial of how to create a custom dashboard check out this Green Circle article.
Supply and Demand
The first widget I selected was “Supply and Demand” which shows you the number of virtual machines, data stores, and hosts in your infrastructure over the last 24 months. This dashboard is meant to highlight the densities in the infrastructure over time. The green horizontal line shows the point in time which the first action was taken in Turbonomic whether manual or automated.
You can flip views to see the VM to Host Densities and VM to Data Store densities, as well as Container and Host and Container and Storage densities by clicking the “show density” button in the top right of the dashboard.
Below we see the amount of VMs we have per Host over time.
The next widget I selected is “Executed Actions” which shows users the amount of actions that have been executed in Turbonomic, when they have been executed, and what types of risks were prevented. This dashboard option is comprised of three views that can be toggled through.
The first view, “Executed Actions”, shows us the actions that have been executed for what we have scoped to. Users have the option of scoping to Physical Machines like below, or can chose VMs, Data Stores, etc. This view will plot the number of actions that Turbonomic has taken on a given day.
The next view users can toggle to is “Risks Avoided by Turbonomic” which mirrors the “Executed Actions” View we just walked through, but shows us the specific category of risk that was mitigated through the executed action.
Categories of Risks Include:
- Memory Congestion
- CPU Congestion
- Ready Que
The last view featured in this widget is the "Manual vs. Automated" actions. This pane will show you the manual actions that have been executed vs. the automated actions that Turbonomic has done for you.
Risks Avoided by Turbonomic
There is a “Risks Avoided by Turbonomic” widget which features a pie graph view of risks that Turbonomic addressed over time rather than a graphical timeline like we saw in the “Executed Actions” widget before.
Risks Over Time
The “Risks Over Time” widget shows the increase in performance through taking and automating Turbonomic’s decisions. This view shows users the breakdown of your scoped infrastructure that has “critical issues”, “major issues”, “minor issues”, and is in a “normal” or healthy state by percentage.
The final widget that I added to my custom executive dashboard is "Health". This widget is not new to version 5.5 but it highlights the health of the entities you have scoped to whether that is Virtual Machines, Physical Machines, Data Stores, etc.
Green indicates the entities that are in a "Healthy State" ; Yellow for "Minor Issues" ; Orange for "Major Issues" ; and Red for "Critical Issues"
You can click into each section of health to see what specific risks there are and toggle to the actions that Turbonomic is suggesting to bring the entities back to a healthy state.
