How to Create Workload Placement Policies (5.4.+)

Workload placement policies can be used to add certain business or operational constraints to Turbonomic. These constraints are then taken into account during Turbonomic's decision making process. For example: 


1. Affinity or anti-affinity rules for a group of VM's (possibly for licensing reasons)

2. Keeping certain VM's on particular groups of Storage (Tiering)


Any placement policies defined from the Hypervisor (for example from DRS) are imported by Turbonomic and adhered to once they are discovered. These can be found here: 


Policy Tab > Workload Placement > Imported Placement Policies


These rules are cluster specific. Turbo allows you to create enterprise- or datacentre-wide policies. 


High-Level Summary


  1. Create a Consumer group
  2. Create a Provider group
  3. Create the policy to allow/not allow the Consumer group to consume resources from the Provider group. 


Step-by-Step Instructions


  1. Navigate to the Policy Tab, and click on 'Group Management'. Click on the Add groups button as shown in the figure below. 

  2. Name the group as desired. 
  3. Once the group has been named, then you can specify the group details. For more information on how to create groups, please refer to this post - How to Create a Custom Group (v5.4+) 
    This group will serve as our 'consumer group' 
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 and create the 'provider group'. This will be the group of entities that will provide resources to the consumer group, for example, a group of hosts or Datastores. For the purpose of this post, I've created the two groups as below:
  5. In the Policy Tab, click on the Workload Placement menu on the left and Click on the New Segment button. 
  6. Configure your policy following the instructions below

    1. Give the policy a name. 
    2. Determine the type of policy
      1. Place: Always place certain consumer entities on certain provider entities.
        Examples: Always place X VMs on Y Hosts or Datastores. Always place X Datastores on Y Disk Arrays
      2. Don’t Place: Never place certain consumer entities on certain provider entities.
        Examples: Never place X VMs on Y Hosts or Datastores
      3. Merge*: Allow Turbonomic to migrate VMs between Host Clusters or Storage Clusters
        Examples: Migrate VMs between clusters Prod_1 and Prod_2.
        *Storage and Network must be configured correctly across clusters so that a migration can take place.
      4. License: Allow Turbonomic to migrate VMs to hosts/clusters containing licenses for those VMs
        Examples: Migrate VMs from any Windows host to an SQLServer licensed host

    3. Select the Consumer Type. The options available are Application, Virtual Machine and Storage. 
    4. Select the Consumer Group. Click on the green button, and you will be able to select a group that matches the consumer type specified in step iii. 
    5. Select the Provider Group. When you click on the green button, you will be able to select a group that provides resources to the selected consumer group.
    6. Click on "Create". The new Policy is located under the "Turbonomic Segments" folder. 


As an example, I've created a policy using the two groups above to place the group of VM's on the group of hosts. 




Turbonomic will now take this policy into account during decision making. 



A couple of other options you have available


Limit Workload entities to placement group - This is selected by default. This limits the consumer group to only be placed on the provider group. 

Limit the number of workload entities per placement entity - This is used in a situation where you want to limit the number of entities placed on a provider. For example, don't place more than 1 VM on an individual host in the respective groups.
