Does anyone know of a query for pulling a report that will show new VMs added each month and their associated operating system. It would be good to have the previous months figures and the change figure also.
Glad to see you in the Green Circle!
Was doing a bit of brain storming - while it's not exactly what you're looking for, you might be able to get the data you need by taking this approach.
Using the custom dashboard functionality, we can use the "VM Operating System" panel which shows a pie-chart of the different types and quantities of guest OSs. Also, using the "Supply and Demand" panel, we can see how the VM count (and host/storage count) has changed over time. When you drag the panels out, you can then scope to certain clusters or datacenters.
Once you've done that, you can then schedule the dashboard to be generated monthly - this then gives you data points you'll always be able to reference moving forward.
In my example below, on the left-hand side I have the "VM Operating System" panel and the "Supply and Demand" panel for my "Production" cluster. On the right, I have the same panels for the Lab cluster.
Just hover your mouse of the different colors to see the breakdown of guest OSs.
Hope this helps!
Unfortunately, I do not think we store the operating systems for VMs in the database.
Let me check on a report for VMs added each month and get back to you ASAP.
Hi Darragh - if you follow this post it shows how to find number of VMs added each month: How to create a report that lists how many VMS have been created over the past 6 months?
The Monthly Summary report is canned in VMTurbo as well and can show numbe rof VMs added.
For you need - what other information would you be looking for (besides operating system)?
Thanks Chris, We just need a simple report that will show us VMs by name added/removed each month and their corresponding OS. If it can't be done the standard monthly report will do. We need the OS as we need to complete a risk report each month. This report needs the server quantity by OS to be filled in.
Win2003 = 100
win 2008 = 80
win 2012 = 30
As we retire older Operating systems we enter the new figure in the risk report each month to keep track but also need to keep a figure for new VMs.
